Video Games as Art
I just returned from UC Berkeley, where I was sitting in on the class Video Games as Art (ENGL 98). It's a DeCal class taught by three (four?) students about, as you can guess from the name, video games as an artistic medium.

I'd decided to sit in after being invited by Eugenia. She said she thought I'd really enjoy the class, and as she explained to me some of the topics that covered, I had to agree. The time conflicted a little with Ohlone College's Game Development Club, where I've been learning to model characters in Autodesk Maya, but VIDEO GAME CLASS, HELLO, so at 4:30 PM, I packed up my things and went to Berkeley.

THE CLASS WAS AMAZIIINNNGGGGG. I wish I'd taken notes because the content was so interesting and I have so much to say about it. Here's what I remember:

Boycotting games based on the beliefs of the creator(s), art history, innovation in game mechanics, sandbox vs. linearity, and more! )

Havemercy
I finished reading Havemercy. EXCELLENT BOOK.

No spoilers, I don't think, save for extremely vague references )

Final Fantasy VIII
I finally defeated Diablos. It's a bit sad, really, considering the Garden's already going crazy and all my other GFs, save for Brothers, are at least level 20. But I tried and tried and could not beat Diablos until yesterday, when I stole all of my non-party members' magic and beefed up my party's stats like whoa. I also had plenty of Cura this time around instead of lowly Cure. Even then, Diablos nearly owned me with two Gravijas in a row, and Rinoa KO'd twice. He also knocked Quezacotl out, even though birdy boy has the most HP out of all my GFs.

I've been thinking about how the GF system in FFVIII is so much better than the Summon system in FFVII. In VIII, you actually give a shit who has what because the GFs directly affect stats and abilities. Plus, you actually use them because you don't have to conserve MP, so conservative as I am about magic, I have no qualms about using Shiva against a T-Rexaur six times in one battle. GFs take a long time to summon, but they deal enough damage that it's worth it, and the Boost system makes the player actually appreciate longer summoning times.

GOOD GAME, THIS ONE. But when NORG's followers started unleashing Grats on me, I had to wonder if they were serious.

Bahamut Lagoon
I think I post about Chapter Twenty-Two more often than I post about any other chapter of Bahamut Lagoon. It's my favorite and least favorite because it's the most difficult. I don't think I've ever beaten it on my first try. =sob= When you lose a campaign in Bahamut Lagoon, you're transported back to your ship, but you get to keep all your EXP and items (which you can use to pump up your dragons), so theoretically, it should be a lot easier the second time around. Well, it was an improvement because instead of getting slaughtered before making it halfway across the map, I whittled the enemy down to four parties and then stupidly had Byuu's party cross through the middle of said four parties, who all targeted Byuu, of course. I'd lost two parties by that time, but a campaign in Bahamut Lagoon isn't lost until Byuu dies.

AND I WAS DOING SO WELL. If I'd had him move north instead of east, I'd probably have won. But as it is, I saved at the beginning of the third attempt, too depressed to continue. :[

The Phoenix Requiem
...is a webcomic by the Sarah Ellerton (Inverloch). It is a sort-of fantasy that takes place in a world based on Victorian England, and stars Anya Katsukova, a nurse who is training to become a doctor. One day, a man is founded wounded in the woods. Anya treats him in time to save his life, but almost immediately after his arrival, a swift illness claims the lives of several townspeople. The Phoenix Requiem follows Anya as she unravels the mysteries surrounding the illness, the spirits of the old myths, and her new patient and discovers how they are linked to one another.

^ I'd say that's a pretty good pitch coming from someone who doesn't know what's going on. ;D ;D How are they linked? I have no idea, but I'm having a ball watching Anya&co. try to figure it out. I'm going through this comic as fast as I went through Inverloch; I'm already halfway through the second volume. Ellerton really has a knack for storytelling, and both the art and story are much improved in The Phoenix Requiem. It's very well-planned, the characters are charming, and the plot is intriguing. I am in love with both Jonas and Petria asdfdgdlkgjlkj.

Re: Heroes S3 Premiere
This show is so epic that it requires a one hour countdown before its two episode premiere, after which was an interview with the cast on NBC news (which I didn't watch). MY GOD IT WAS AMAZING.

Liked vs. Disliked )

WHOA.

Re: Zettai Kareshi Ep. 11
I HELLA CRIED. Like throughout the whole thing. It was crazy, and it was gross, and my eyes feel so dry. Mizushima Hiro is beautiful in this show. (So is Sasaki Kuranosuke in a forty-year-old man sort of way.)

Whoops, I forgot to do this after watching the episode. Time to backtrack!

GOD I'M SO DEPRESSED )

Like [livejournal.com profile] ipsius, I have decided to respond to every episode of Code Geass from now on, starting with episode 14. This post will be dedicated to Season 1 and R2 1-13 as a whole because I haven't the patience to go through it all separately. Spoilers abound, flailing, fangirling, etc.

I'm filtering this to people whom I know watch Code Geass because I don't want curious eyes to peer into 38 episodes worth of spoilers.

HOLY BLUE FLIPPERS I HAVEN'T LIKED ANYTHING THIS MUCH SINCE GOSSIP GIRL EXCEPT THAT I PROBABLY LIKE CODE GEASS MORE )

Am I finally done with this post? I think I may be ... for now. I joined 15 Code Geass fanlistings today. Expect more ranting in the futures because I am so addicted to this show. <3

Oh btw, link me to all your Code Geass entries so that I can respond to them now. ;) ;)
