So you stopped watching Doctor Who after the Tenth Doctor and now you want to catch up but don’t want to watch nine full seasons that are Not all Good. You’re in luck! I watched eighteen years of Doctor Who so you don’t have to. Here’s what to watch. Essentials highlighted, or find “essential”.
By the way,
If you watch one Doctor, it should be: Twelve
If you watch one series, it should be: Series 9
Eleven (Matt Smith)
While I like Matt Smith as the Doctor, this is my least favorite era writing-wise. You can skip the whole thing if you’re so inclined. Except “Day of the Doctor.” That is essential.
Series 5
What I think of this series: I’m not a big fan because I find neither the Doctor nor Amy compelling, but there are some solid episodes.
📺 5x01 The Eleventh Hour
Optional, but it’s a really strong season opener and introduces you to the Doctor and Amy’s Whole Deal. Would that the rest of their run were as strong as this episode.
📺 5x07 Amy’s Choice
Optional, but very funny.
📺 5x10 Vincent and the Doctor
Optional, but feels like a Mary Oliver poem. Note that for plot reasons, Amy doesn’t remember Rory in this episode.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: Amy remembers Rory again and they get married. The rest of the plot of this series absolutely does not matter.
📺 Xmas 2010 A Christmas Carol
Optional, but a very well-crafted standalone time travel story. No plot relevance whatsoever.
Series 6
What I think of this series: I hate it lmao. My most behated ♥
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: Oh boy. We learn that River Song (Alex Kingston) from the S4 story “Silence in the Library / Forest of the Dead” is Amy and Rory’s daughter Melody Pond who has Time Lord-ism because she was conceived on the TARDIS in the Time Vortex. She was then kidnapped as a baby before growing into a Badass Woman With Gun. I despise this storyline. ♥
📺 6x11 The God Complex
Optional, but a banger and relevant to the ongoing theme of the Doctor’s fear that traveling with people means losing them. Plot importance: Amy and Rory stop living on the TARDIS full-time.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: The Doctor and River get married at the end of the season even though Matt Smith and Alex Kingston have zero chemistry lol.
Series 7
What I think of this series: Growing pains. Vacillates wildly between terrible and good. Presages showrunner Steven Moffat’s upcoming good writing era. Introduces Clara, but her characterization isn’t anywhere near as interesting as it will be in S8 and S9.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: A new character named Oswin Oswald (Jenna Coleman) saves the Doctor and then dies ("Asylum of the Daleks"). Some stuff happens with the Daleks that feels like it should have consequences, but it doesn't. Rory’s father Brian accidentally comes along for an adventure and then goes on his own travels with the Doctor ("Dinosaurs on a Spaceship"). Cute!
📺 7x04 The Power of Three
Optional, but a really lovely sendoff for Amy and Rory and relevant to our Ongoing Themes. Also introduces Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, head of UNIT Science, who will return for Twelve, Thirteen, and Fourteen. This is my favorite non-special episode of the year.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: Amy and Rory leave the TARDIS because they’re zapped by Weeping Angels and, for some reason, the Doctor can never time travel to see them again (?). Unclear on why. When we see the Doctor wear glasses in future episodes, they’re Amy’s reading glasses.
📺 Xmas 2012 The Snowmen
Optional, but a banger standalone and important to the S7 Clara plot. I love this episode and have watched it a lot!!!!!!
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: The Doctor meets present day Clara (Jenna Coleman) and takes her along because he wants to know what’s up with Oswin Oswald and Clara Oswin Oswald. Plot important: They first meet because Clara gets the number for the TARDIS phone from an unknown woman. The Doctor and Clara get FLIRTY. Tobias Menzies appears (“Cold War”). Some people say, “Everything ends.” “No, not everything. Not love. Not always.” (“Hide”). There’s a terribly annoying finale that does sexily culminate in Clara jumping into the Doctor’s timestream in order to save his life—by being born over and over to save him. It’s important to me as a DoctorClara.
📺 50th Anniversary The Day of the Doctor
ESSENTIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eleven and Clara are joined by the Tenth Doctor and the War Doctor (John Hurt), the Doctor who destroyed Gallifrey to end the Time War. It’s an episode about shame and regret. Shockingly good.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: Eleven spends 900 defending one planet and regenerates of old age or something. He’s supposed to be out of regenerations, but Gallifrey slithers through a crack to grant him 12 more. Lmao. He regenerates into Twelve and the regeneration is okay.
Twelve (Peter Capaldi)
Second favorite Doctor after Ten!!!!! The level up between Eleven era and Twelve is unreal; I keep saying Steven Moffat regenerated into a new writer. This era is also very much an emotional sequel to Ten, as well as an emotional prequel to Fourteen.
Series 8
What I think of this series: Good!!!! We’re skipping episodes because we’re aiming for brevity, not because any of them are bad. This series is also the start of Clara’s insane era. DoctorClara is yuri.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: The Doctor wonders where he got his new face. After a very flirty Elevenhood with Clara, he now tells Clara in no uncertain terms, “I’m not your boyfriend.” “I never thought you were.” “I never said it was your mistake.” omg. (“Deep Breath”) Clara starts dating a maths teacher named Danny who is a veteran and she accidentally makes fun of his PTSD a lot. Clara accidentally travels to the Doctor’s childhood and strokes his little head as he sleeps (“Listen”).
📺 8x06 The Caretaker
Optional, but it’s super funny and is where Danny finds out about the Doctor.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: The Doctor puts Clara in an emotionally terrible situation and she breaks up with him (“Kill the Moon”). But then they go on one last sexy romantic deadly train ride that changes her mind—except she’s lying to Danny that she’s not traveling with the Doctor anymore (“Mummy on the Orient Express”). Infidelity era!
📺 8x09 Flatline
Optional, but it’s our first major introduction to the recurring theme that Clara is very like the Doctor. It’s also generally a banger.
📺 8x11 Dark Water / 8x12 Death in Heaven
Essential!!! Plotwise, the things that happen in this episode will impact Series 9. The character stuff will impact Series 10 as well. It’s also just an emotionally and thematically rich story. And it’s important to my fic.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: “Last Christmas” is a skip for me, but it does resolve where the Doctor and Clara left things at the end of S8 and establish Clara’s state of mind (unwell!) going into S9.
Series 9 (WATCH THIS ONE)
What I think of this series: PEAK! DON’T SKIP ANY OF THE EPISODES BELOW.
📺 9x01 The Magician’s Apprentice / 9x02 The Witch’s Familiar
Watch this for the overarching plot, the series emotional arc (DoctorClara), and the Doctor’s character arc in S9 and beyond, as well as for my femslash ship, my m/f yaoi ship, and the stunning DoctorDavros.
📺 9x03 Under the Lake / 9x04 Before the Flood
Optional, but soooo good!!!!!!!! Really good standalone horror, as well as heavy on the series emotional arc (DoctorClara).
📺 9x05 The Girl Who Died
Introduces a major recurring character for the series, moves forward the series emotional arc (DoctorClara).
📺 9x06 The Woman Who Lived
Optional, but I like this episode!!!!!! Focuses on the new character from the previous episode. Clara is not in it.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: Nothing important plotwise. “The Zygon Invasion”/”The Zygon Inversion” is worth it for Doctor character stuff and Jenna Coleman playing a villain. “Sleep No More” is a fun found footage horror one.
📺 9x10 Face the Raven
Essential.
📺 9x11 Heaven Sent
Essential. Notable for being almost entirely Peter Capaldi, no supporting actors.
📺 9x10 Hell Bent
Essential.
📺 Xmas 2015 The Husbands of River Song
Optional but hilarious and made me, a noted River anti, a DoctorRiver. TwelveRiver just hits different. First apperance of Nardole, but returns in S10 as the Doctor’s sidekick cyborg.
Series 10
What I think of this series: Good!!!! I love Bill and her dynamic with the Doctor. There’s no episode I don’t enjoy.
📺 10x01 The Pilot
Optional, but it’s a great introduction to Bill and her relationship with the Doctor.
📺 10x03 Thin Ice
Optional, but the DoctorBill relationship levels up here. My imaginary Franklin Expedition episode of Doctor Who is a sequel to this episode.
📺 10x05 Oxygen
Optional, but it’s the most explicitly anti-capitalist episode of Doctor Who.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: We learn the Doctor has been keeping Missy in a Vault under the university because he was called upon to execute her and refused but vowed to watch over her body for a thousand years. They’ve also been like… having picnic dates down there. And he got her a piano.
📺 10x08 The Lie of the Land
Optional, but it’s peak DoctorBill.
📺 10x11 World Enough and Time / 10x12 The Doctor Falls
Optional, but part 2 is both incredibly sexy and a wonderful character story for the Doctor and culmination of the Twelfth Doctor’s character arc. Also, while he doesn’t regenerate in this story, he sustains the injuries that will cause his regeneration in the next. Also, hot Master story.
📺 Xmas 2017 Twice Upon a Time
Essential. This episode is a metaphor: the Twelfth Doctor’s psychopomps guiding him toward death. It’s not necessarily a banger episode, but it’s the one that most informs my understanding of the character and the one I kept thinking about while watching the 2023 special “The Giggle”. Twelve also has theeeeee best regeneration scene I have watched it three hundred times.
Thirteen (Jodie Whitaker)
We were all rooting for you!!!! This era is bad in a different way than Eleven era was bad, which is that it’s mainly just boring. It never develops the Doctor-Companion relationships, and the individual episodes are full of misses. However, it gave me one sexy, sexy favorite character and a bucket of new trauma for the Doctor. Entirely skippable if you like.
Series 11
What I think of this series: Why is it so lackluster…
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: The Doctor takes on three new companions: Yaz, Graham, and Ryan. Graham is Ryan’s step-grandfather whose wife, Ryan’s grandmother, Grace died in the first episode.
📺 11x06 Demons of the Punjab
Optional, but New Who has never had a better historical.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: I almost want to recommend “Kerblam!” for the memes about what an ethical misfire the episode is. Nothing important happens this series.
Series 12
What I think of this series: The plot of this series actually has such dramatic consequences for the Doctor as a character that it’s arguably the most plot-important series in the entire show. Highly, highly controversial, so they may not do much with it ever again lol. Personally, I think it’s hot. And I will explain it to you in a five-minute voice post. I’m not marking anything essential, but some matter for New Doctor Lore.
📺 12x01 / 12x02 Spyfall
Plot-important spy thriller episode. Introduces the sexiest character in the series. Unfortunately also has the Doctor’s most racist moment?
📺 12x05 Fugitive of the Judoon
Plot-important mystery episode. Jack Harkness is here a bit.
What happens in the episodes we’re skipping: Edward Little is in “Praxaeus”.
📺 12x08 The Haunting of Villa Diodati
Optional, but the best haunted house episode yet. Shelleys and Lord Byron. Also one of the more interesting episodes for the Thirteenth Doctor as a complex incarnation and plot relevant going into the finale.
📺 12x09 Ascension of the Cybermen / 10x10 The Timeless Children
Finale! Sexy character is back for “The Timeless Children,” which contains a massive lore drop that made every Whovian so angry lmfao. Personally, I think it’s fun. The script is not good, but the delivery makes it worth watching imo.
📺 New Year 2021 Revolution of the Daleks
Skippable, but Jack Harkness is here, and he and Yaz talk about the Doctor in a gendery way. Ryan and Graham leave the TARDIS.
Series 13
What I think of this series: This is one 6-episode story, and I personally find it fun! But also I can summarize it for you in a couple minutes lol. It comes up in “Wild Blue Yonder.”
What happens in S13 Flux: The Division unleashes the Flux, which destroys half the universe in order to get to the Doctor. We learn the Doctor was a furry in a past life. Tecteun is here being a baddie and giving the Doctor new mommy issues. The Doctor obtains a fobwatch containing her missing memories and drops it into the heart of the TARDIS without opening it. The Doctor gains a companion named Dan Lewis (John Bishop), who is my friend. Another new friend, Vinder (Jacob Anderson), will also return in “The Power of the Doctor”.
📺 New Year 2022 Eve of the Daleks
Optional, but SO fun. Like top ten episodes of the show fun. Features Aisling Bea. Thasmin.
📺 BBC Centennary The Power of the Doctor
Optional. The most important thing here is that the Master dances to “Rasputin” by Boney M. At the end, the Doctor dumps Yaz and, to their shock, regenerates into David Tennant.
Fourteen (David Tennant)
David Tennant returns for three 2023 specials, and they’re all good!!!!!!
📺 Special 1 The Star Beast
If you’re a Donna Noble fan, watch this for sure.
📺 Special 2 Wild Blue Yonder
Genuinely one of the best horror episodes ever.
📺 Special 3 The Giggle
Essential. Functionally a finale to the “New Who” era before the soft reboot. An emotional sequel to everything that has come between Series 4 and the 2023 specials, but especially “Twice Upon a Time” imo.
Fifteen (Ncuti Gatwa)
First full series to arrive in May 2024!
May expand this to include a Ninth and Tenth Doctor "speedrun" xoxo
By the way,
