Fred Plays Final Fantasy VII Part IV

This is a short entry because Part III ended so close to the end of Disc Two. But except for the the frustratingly slow shuffle through the tunnels beneath Midgar, the events of this entry were NON-STOP EPIC. Screencaps are from Caves of Narshe.

WE'RE GOING TO NORTH CRATER TO FIGHT SEPHIROTH FINAL BATTLES GUYS oh shit what Hojo is still around? J/k, back to Midgar.

Tangent: I know from Cait Sith's Final Fantasy Wiki page that Reeve controls him mentally, but I wish this had been explained in FF7 because it was very odd that Cait Sith was still in operation when Reeve was arrested.

But oh no guys! All ways into the Midgar slums are blocked! Well, no. I found the Sector 5 key at Bone Village, see, and it still works fine. But the gang pretends that the key doesn't work so that they have an excuse to parachute into Midgar. I love the scene where they all run out onto the deck and the crew of the Highwind salutes them as they pass. RAGTAG TEAM IS RAGTAG TEAM OF HEROES NOW.
Midgar
The enemies in the tunnels beneath Midgar were fucking annoying because they're fast, their attacks take forever, and they inflict Slow on the party, which for some reason is not blocked by Ribbon. HATE THEM. At least they don't do damage (although that makes battles with them boring, as well).

The optional Turk fight was difficult, partially because it was the first boss fight I've played in a month, so I forgot to cast Big Guard. It's a little sad that the Turks are so powerful but they're just Heideggar's lackeys. I think it's better for the story and more in-character for Reno that the party doesn't fight them, but I wanted the spoils.
I love the way Heideggar and Scarlet laugh together when they emerge from the Proud Clod. OTP right there. I wonder if Proud Clod is a play on Cloud Prod. Probably not. Battle was cake.

The Hojo battles were not difficult, since I had two Ribbons and a Fairy Ring on my party. I like that in the end, Hojo goes over the brink, willing to destroy the planet and mutating himself, allegedly for his son, but that there's also an undercurrent of resentment because of the way Sephiroth has looked down on him. I've never been very attracted to Hojo as a character, but that scene gave me pause. Perhaps I ought to think on his character more.
I like how the characters retain their battle positions for a few seconds after defeating Hojo, as if they can't believe that's really the end of him.
Highwind
Cloud's "What are we all fighting for?" speech, in which Cloud asks everybody to leave and figure out whether they're really willing to risk their lives on what is probably a suicide mission. This totally happened in Flame of Recca, but less epic and with more focus on what each character did when they went their separate ways.

Tifa and Cloud have an ~intimate moment~ and bang either under the airship or in the chocobo stable. I don't think I ever realized before this scene that they really don't have anything but each other. Their town still stands, looking just like it did five years ago, but the people have all been replaced. Their families are dead. Zangan is who-knows-where. Tifa's new family of AVALANCHE is all gone, too, with the exception of Barret, and if Cloud had any friends besides Zack in the Shinra military, he certainly doesn't anymore. BUT AS LONG AS THEY'RE TOGETHER, THEY'LL NEVER GIVE UP!!! *SHIP ALL THE SHIPS!*

Then they go onto the bridge, and of course, THE GANG IS BAAAAAACK, having quickly decided to dedicate themselves to the fight and having used the rest of the night to spy on the couple banging under the airship/in the chocobo stable.
I just have to say: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA VINCENT HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. I AM SUPER AFRAID THAT DIRGE OF CERBERUS WILL TAKE THIS GUY SERIOUSLY.
I LOVE THAT RED HAS FAITH IN YUFFIE. I LOVE THAT BARRET LACKS FAITH IN YUFFIE. I LOVE THAT YUFFIE COMES BACK, FUCK BARRET, DESPITE NEVER REVEALING HERSELF TO CARE ABOUT THE FIGHT. I LOVE YOU, YUFFIE, FOREVER FOREVER MY FAAAAAAVE.

AND THEN AAAAAAAAAH AERITTHHHHHHHH. The moment for Aerith really ties the scene together. Can't have an EPIC TEAM MOMENT without the entire team, yeah?
Why is this translation so awkward, though? For the most part, it's pretty great, but sometimes ... I just really want a retranslation.
I LOVE THAT THEY LET THE CREW GO. I LOVE THAT THE CREW CAME BACK OR NEVER LEFT.
THIS HAS BEEN A BOTTOMLESS BUCKET OF EPIC. FRED OUT.
