Having just finished Doctor Who Series 6 Part 1 last night (HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT), I am about to start Torchwood: Miracle Day! My hopes and expectations are many, but if only a handful of them are fulfilled, I will be so pleased.
Spoilers through "House of the Dead."
1) Jack gets a new lover. I really want there to be a theme of Jack outliving everybody he loves before John Barrowman becomes too old to believably play a character who barely ages, so he'll have to go through lovers pretty quickly. Preferably a woman to change things up. Their relationship is ~complicated~ because Jack still loves Ianto and his guilt exacerbates his grief (though I think "House of the Dead" helped a lot).
2) MASSIVE GUILT ISSUES FOR JACK. I want them to be mostly buried because Jack is all about burying feelings, but for the sake of continuity and impact, he should have his moments. Like the Doctor in S3.
3) The Jack/Gwen thing dies. Because I have never liked that. Plus, what Jack needs is a BFF, not complicated sexual tension with a married woman.
4) RHYS BECOMES INCREASINGLY BADASS. I AM ON TEAM RHYS.
5) Martha and Mickey. But that's not gonna happen.
6) ETHNIC DIVERSITY!!!!!!1!!
7) Some kind of coherent character arc for Gwen that doesn't involve her being a crazy bitch. J/k, I think she already has one, but since I don't like Gwen, I haven't given it much thought.
8) When we first met Jack in Doctor Who 1.09 "The Empty Child," we learned that two years of his memories were stolen by the Time Agency, which is why he left it. CAN WE ADDRESS THE TWO MISSING YEARS OF JACK'S LIFE NOW? They feel so inconsequential now that he's been alive for over a century (or two millennia if you are not in denial about the Series 2 finally like I am), but you can't leave things like that hanging.
9) MYFANWY. Somebody tell me she's still alive.
10) I want them to address whether everything in the vaults of the Hub was blown up. Like Gray. Because lol.
11) Reappearance of the gizmo from Children of Earth. Because I love continuity.
12) GWEN BEING LARGE AND IN CHARGE. After abandoning the Earth for two years and leaving Gwen to pull Torchwood back together from absolutely nothing — no members, no HQ, only a few gadgets and software — I want Jack to have to wrestle with Gwen for power. And I want him to lose (for a while). Willingly. He doesn't want to be in charge anymore. But he has to be because he's so damn good at it. (Ideally, that's how the story would go, but I actually think Gwen is better at it than Jack is. But I guess Jack is more practiced at making the really hard decisions.)
13) I WANT GWEN AND RHYS TO BE HAPPY AND HEALTHY. I LOVE MARRIED COUPLES.
14) OH CAN THE NEW CHARACTERS BE AMAZING PLEASE?
All right, guys! Time to dive in! Ooooh, I hope this series will be nearly as excellent as Children of Earth! No, what am I saying, that's nigh impossible. I hope this series will be nearly as excellent as Doctor Who!
edit: THAT FIRST EPISODE WAS SO MUCH MORE AND SO MUCH BETTER THAN I EXPECTED WHAT WHAT. AAAAAAAAAH. ♥
